Wendell Lee Cephus, 65, passed away on May 15, 2026.  Born on April 19, 1961, Wendell led, a full life of energy, laughter, and unmistakable presence. Known for being loud, funny, and larger than life, he brought joy, humor, and spirit to every room he entered. 

Wendell was born to the late, William O. Cephus, affectionately known as “Sleepy,“ And Dorothy Mae Cephas.  In addition to his parent, he was proceeded in death by his brothers: William Cephus, James Gibbs, Stanley Cephus, Percy Cephus, Maurice Cephus, and Billy Ringgold.

At the age of four, Wendell, and four of his brothers were welcomed into the home of Otis and Virginia Lee Sharp, who lovingly raised them for the remainder of their childhood. Their care, support, and guidance played an important role in shaping the person he became.

Wendell graduated from Colonel Richardson high school in June 1979 where he was proudly voted by his classmates as “Loudest” and “Most School Spirit“ -titles that perfectly captured his vibrant personality and love for life. He went on to attend the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, MD.

In 1983, Wendell moved to Washington, D.C. where he began his adult life and career. He dedicated over 20 years of service to Delta Airlines, a job he truly loved. During his time there, he built, lifelong friendships and a lasting impression on colleagues and travelers alike with his warmth, humor, and unforgettable personality. In his later years, he continued working at Homewood suites by Hilton, where he remained a familiar and welcoming presence. And let us not forget that he was an an advent bingo player and enjoyed going to the casinos.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two devoted brothers, Anthony (Tony) Cephus and Charles Cephus; a host of beloved nieces and nephews, and a loving circle of extended family, including Barbara (Paul) Holmes, Loretta McCray, Sherman Sharp, Verna Jenkins, Frances Coulbourn, and Mary Elizabeth (Hilton) Jones. He is also fondly remembered by many dear friends, especially Wanda Layne, William Wilson, and Clarissa Hubbard, all of whom were touched by his kindness, humor, and enduring spirit.

Wendell was also a proud advocate for his community. He constantly supported church functions and community events, always showing up with his signature energy and willingness to help bring people together.

Wendell will always be remembered by his booming voice, his infectious laugh, his mischievous ways, and the incredible spirit that made him truly one of a kind. His presence could never be ignored, and his absence will be deeply felt – but his memory will live on in the heart of all who knew and loved him.
