Thelma Deloise Scofield Wright, of Denton, Maryland, a retired elementary teacher, entered Heaven’s Pearly Gates on Sunday, July 21, 2024 peacefully at home in the arms of her daughter and grandson Lydell. She was born on March 2, 1935 to the late Clarence Edward and Mary Arevia Scofield in the small community known as Deep Branch, located between Denton and Hillsboro, Maryland. She was the seventh of eight children.
Thelma received her early education at Ridgely Elementary School, in Ridgely Maryland. She entered Lockerman High School from 8th through the 12th grades. She graduated from Lockerman High School in 1953 and that fall entered Bowie State University (Bowie State Teacher’s College).
After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from Bowie State Teachers College, she attended other colleges to further her education. Thelma returned to the Eastern Shore where she would begin her teaching career in Dorchester County, Maryland. She was employed by Dorchester County Public Schools for thirty-three years. Once she retired from her teaching career, she became a counselor for individuals with developmental disabilities at the Caroline Center.

Thelma was a dedicated and active member of Bell’s Chapel AME Church and served on the following organizations: Church Treasurer, Steward Board, Daisey A. Lake Missionary Society, Lay Organization, Usher Board President, former Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Trustee Board, and sang on the Bell’s Angelic Choir.
Thelma was a very family-oriented person and always encouraged her family to do their very best. One of her last wishes was to have a family reunion and it was honored on June 22, 2024. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. When she found the time, she enjoyed playing solitaire on her cell phone and calling family members to “check in”. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to the events of the many organizations she was a member of until her health began to decline.
In addition to her parents, Clarence Edward and Mary Arevia Scofield she was predeceased by her siblings Evelyn, Lucille, Clarence, Roger, Dorsey, and Leon.
She leaves to cherish her memory and to remember her love, her children Kevin (Tina), Karen (Darin), Stanley (Delilah); her sister Brenda Ewing, her grandchildren, Kevin (Chasity), Lydell, Briana, step-grandson, Edward, step-granddaughters, Tamika, Brittney, great-grandsons, Jaydin, Joshua, Jourdan, Cayden, a special nephew, Roth, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
