Shirley R. Caven, affectionately known as 'Mom-mom' and 'Mommy,' passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, in Hurlock, MD at the age of 85.
Shirley was born in Dorchester County, Maryland, on March 8, 1939, to her mother Irene Lake and father, Spencer Jones. She was lovingly raised by her stepfather, Melvin Lake, alongside her mother. Shirley eventually moved to Hurlock, MD, where she began her career as a line worker at the John Wright Factory. She later pursued her true calling as a hairstylist, a passion and talent she cherished throughout her lifelong career until her retirement in 2005.
Known for her infectious humor, unfiltered commentary and love of bingo, Shirley brought joy and laughter to everyone around her. She especially treasured spending quality time with her family, friends and loved ones.
Shirley is predeceased by her beloved husband of 46 years, David Caven and her son, Allen Lake.
Shirley leaves behind a loving family to celebrate her memory: her brothers; Kenneth Moses and George Wright and his wife Brenda and her sister Lucretia Johnson; her aunt Emma; her grandchildren; Montwaine, Telicia, Donshirl, Nikita, Lashonda, Vance Jr., Paulton, and Damon; her great-grandchildren, Monisha, Marquise, Jalen, Trinity, Meah, Amir, Tykee, Tevion, Amoree, Damien, Dominique, Ziyah, and Zyasia; goddaughter Dalzina; cousins, Tonydra and Helen; her stepdaughters, Arletta and her husband Charles, Marlyn and her husband Ransford, and Carlene and her husband Jeffrey; and her daughter-in-law, Tracy Lake.
