Sarah Greene Obituary

Sarah Jane Johnson Greene was called home on January 23,2020, she was 83. Born on April 23,1936, she was the fifth child of six to the late James Perry Johnson and Marion Odessa Cluff. Sarah grew up in Caroline County surrounded by the love of her parents, siblings and extended family members.

Sarah excelled at academia and sports while at Lockerman High School in Denton, Md. Sarah ran the first leg of the 4 x 100 relay race for the high school track team. She was also the Class Valedictorian for the Lockerman High School Class of 1954.
She went on to continue her education at Bowie State Teacher’s College, where she became more excited about teaching at the elementary level. Once she graduated, she taught for 34 years in Queen Anne County (Centerville), Caroline County (Federalsburg), and Woodbridge School Districts. During her 34 years of teaching, Sarah was responsible for creating holiday pageants that included her second-grade class participating in speeches, dances, and historical reflection.

Sarah also cooked two Thanksgiving dinners most years, one for her family, and the other for her class. She always said, “Some of these kids will not have a Thanksgiving meal.” This demonstrates how giving Sarah lived her life. Some of her other school activities included: field trips to the Washington Zoo, the Naval Academy and the Smithsonian. One of her crowning achievements, and there were many, was being named Teacher of the Year in 1983 representing the Woodbridge School District. Since she was a finalist for the State of Delaware, she met Senator Joe Biden at that time.

Sarah lived a life filled with joy. She loved to bowl and travel. If the car was leaving, she would be ready to go. She held several positions at John Wesley and Mt. Calvary churches. Sarah helped in many ways with the Lockerman Association such as creating the first alumni newsletter with Lillie Johnson and helping identify scholarship recipients and maintaining connections to the community.

After Sarah started her career in teaching, she met Edward M. Greene and they were married on June 8, 1963. From this union came two sons, Edward M. Greene Jr. of Santa Cruz, California and Michael (Cynthia) Greene of Federalsburg, MD; In addition to her sons, she leaves one step-son,Vaughn (Nigina) Robinson of Clinton, MD; two grandchildren – Mikeya & Marcus Greene ; one great-granddaughter, Kamora Jackson; two sisters, Lillie Johnson of Federalsburg, MD, Madeline Long of Washington, DC, one brother, Warner Johnson of Federalsburg, MD and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family.

Sarah was preceded in death by brothers Perry and Alfred Johnson.
