Portia Mincey Obituary

Portia Diana Mincey was called home to be with the Lord on August 10, 2025, at the age of 83. Although she resided in Colorado, she was visiting family and friends in St. Michaels, MD at the time of her transition.

Portia was born on January 4, 1942, in Talbot County, MD, to the late Eva Alverta Wood and Thomas Murray Thomas. She was educated in the state of New York where she attended Pelham Memorial High School. While attending, she served on the Pelham Student Body, and joined the High School Chorus, Business Club, Pel Mel and Honor Squad. She also loved sports and played volleyball, basketball and baseball.

After graduating, Portia was employed as a secretary at Johns-Manville Corporation. After several years the company moved their business and employees to Colorado. Portia saw this as an opportunity to start anew and relocated along with the company. She resided in Colorado well after her retirement.

Portia was a fun seeking and personable individual, known for her beauty, wit, class, style, and great sense of humor. Though she lived far away, she always felt near as she kept in contact with loved ones back home. She enjoyed time with family and friends, strolling through the community with neighbors, and assisting the elderly with chores. When she had free time, her interests were drawn to arts and crafts – especially crocheting and knitting. They were her new love, and she was very good at both. She knitted and crocheted for everybody.

Although she became an avid shopper of second-hand stores, she preferred to jokingly call her favorite (Goodwill) Neiman Marcus.

Portia leaves to cherish her memory, her eldest sister, B. Virginia Jackson of Wittman, MD, brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Charlote Wood of Baltimore, MD, brother, Mark Wood of St. Michaels, MD. She will also be dearly missed by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Especially her nephew, Nehemiah, who she loved like a son.

In addition to her parents, Portia was preceded in death by her brother, Michael who passed away in infancy, grandmother, Mary B. Wood, and younger sister, Delores Custis.
