Patricia “Patty” Hughes age 74, of Cambridge, MD, passed away on March 06, 2026 at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton. She was born on May 18, 1951 in Cambridge, MD to Elois Martin and Leon Johnson. Patty, as she was affectionately called, graduated from Maces Lane High School in 1969.
She was a Taurus woman in every sense: strong-willed, grounded, and unforgettable. Known for her unmatched cooking and gift for bringing people together, her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and full plates. She had a natural way of hosting that made everyone feel welcome, seen, and cared for.
On March 27th 1971, she married Marvin “Bunny” Hughes, what began between them grew into a 54-year love story. Together, they created a life that drew people in— where the doors were always open, the food was plentiful, and music and laughter filled the room. Their dynamic was real and unfiltered, marked by honest words and strong opinions, but grounded in a deep, enduring commitment to one another. Through every season, they stood side by side — working hard, building a life, and staying united in what mattered most. As partners in every sense, they provided for their family, protected what they had built, and gave generously to those around them. Their bond was not without its challenges, but it was steadfast, and it carried them through a lifetime together. From their union came one daughter, Ursula “Pepper” Hughes — whom she loved with unwavering devotion and protected with fierce pride. In time, she became the cherished “Mommom” of two granddaughters, Dabrianna “Bri” Green and Jayda Cooper, who brought her immeasurable joy. She adored them endlessly, spoiled them generously, and spoke of them with boundless pride. Her girls were, without question, her most cherished accomplishment.
Patty carried herself with grit and determination, never shying away from hard work or hard truths. She held roles at several organizations, but began the most defining phase of her career at Dorchester General hospital, Fassett Magee Health Center. A few years later, she solidified her career at Perdue Farms, Inc. in Milford, DE (where she eventually retired) as a USDA inspector (a testament to her strength and refusal to settle for less than she earned).
She was charismatic and bold, never one to hold her tongue, yet her warmth made even her most unpredictable remarks land with love. Fiercely protective and deeply devoted, she poured everything into her family. She was their constant — supporting every dream, steady through every storm, and making sure they were always provided for, no matter the cost to herself.
Her love extended beyond her immediate family. She was a devoted caretaker to her mother, brother, sister, and grandmother, walking with each of them through life until their final days. That kind of love — the kind that stays, that sacrifices, that endures — is a rare and powerful legacy.
She was known for her signature bold red lipstick, the unforgettable scent of White Diamonds perfume, and a presence that filled any room she entered. There was nothing small about her. Not her love. Not her personality. Not her impact.
Her life was not always easy, and she did not share every chapter of her journey. But what is certain is that becoming the woman she was took strength, faith, and resilience. And she did it on her own terms.
Above all, she loved God. She attended virtual bible study & service faithfully until her final days, finding comfort and guidance in her beliefs. She spent her free time enjoying Ravens games, shopping, watching her favorite westerns, and sitting on the porch with friends and family. As for her legacy, her family was her heart, her purpose, and her greatest pride. Everything she did, she did for them. And everything she was will live on through them.
Pat Hughes is survived by her daughter, Ursula “Pepper” Hughes of Hurlock, MD, two granddaughters, Dabrianna “Bri” Green of Hurlock, MD and Jayda Cooper or Hurlock, MD, a brother, Raymond Chase of Towson, MD, two sisters, Joann Chase and Patricia “Tishie” Camper-Lee of Cambridge, MD, and a stepfather, Joseph Martin of Lansing, Michigan — alongside many nieces, nephews, devoted relatives, and friends. Preceding her in death was her husband, Marvin Hughes, mother, Elois Martin of Cambridge, MD, father, Leon Johnson, grandmother, Bernice Cornish of Cambridge, MD, sister, Lois Martin of Cambridge, MD, and brothers, Kenneth Stinson and Leon Camper of Cambridge, MD.
