Marvin Hughes Obituary

Marvin “Bunny” Hughes age 78, of Hurlock, MD, passed away on July 29 2025 at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health at Cambridge. He was born on September 3, 1946 in Hurlock, MD to Florence and Clarence Hughes. Bunny, as he was affectionately called, graduated from Maces Lane High School in 1964.

Later launching his career at General Foods in Dover, DE, he quickly earned a reputation for his unwavering integrity and steady hands. When duty called, he answered without hesitation, serving four honorable years in the Army National Guard.

In March of 1971, he married Patricia “Patty” Hughes, beginning a 54-year love story that became something of a hometown legend. Their marriage was known for hosting the best parties — full of music, laughter, and home cooked food — along with their signature banter that always ended in shared purpose. They were a team in every sense, coming together to provide for their family, protect what mattered most, and give back generously to their community. From their union came one daughter, Ursula “Pepper” Hughes — whose sheer existence filled him with pride. Later, he became the proud grandfather of two granddaughters, Dabrianna “Bri” Green and Jayda Cooper, whom he adored endlessly and spoiled selflessly.

He went on to build a long and successful career at EI DuPont in Seaford, DE, where he eventually retired — though “retired” was never really in his vocabulary. Not one to sit still, he rolled up his sleeves once again and founded Elite Construction Company, a business built on grit, vision, heart, and creativity. Servicing the Eastern Shore and Delaware area(s), he built homes from the ground up — making repairs big and small, and handling just about everything in between. If it involved a toolbox and a little elbow grease, he was your guy. Among his proudest accomplishments? Building his daughter’s home from the ground up, one brick at a time, every nail driven with love.

But perhaps one of his crowd-favorite talents was his signature dance moves. He had a very specific style: a wind-up of the hips, arms stretched out just-so, somewhere between a Motown backup dancer and Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” dance break. He gave it everything he had — out of breath, but as pleased with himself as if he’d just won “Dancing with the Stars.”

In his later years, he enjoyed snacking on sweet treats, watching the news, and getting lost in his favorite gangster movies and westerns.

Bunny was a man of deep faith, quiet strength, and bold black-tie fashion. loved his family fiercely, never backed down from hard work, and poured a stiff glass of Crown Royal with pride (emphasis on the glass — never plastic). From building a house to bringing down the house, he leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and talent as raw as the materials he built with.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia “Patty” Hughes of Cambridge, MD, daughter, Ursula “Pepper” Hughes of Hurlock, MD, two granddaughters, Dabrianna “Bri” Green of Hurlock, MD and Jayda Cooper or Hurlock, MD, two sisters, Margaret “Sissy” Hughes of Hurlock, MD and Renda Luke Chenault of Preston, MD (Ricky Chenault), a brother-in-law, Raymond Chase of Baltimore, MD, two sister-in laws, Joann Chase and Patricia “Tishie” Lee of Cambridge, MD — alongside many nieces, nephews, devoted relatives, and friends. Proceeding him in death are two late brothers, Levi Hughes of Seaford, DE, Leon McGrath of Hurlock, MD, and his late sister, Charlotte “Blockie” Hughes of Hurlock, MD.
