Kimberly Lawhorne Obituary

Kimberly Faith Stewart Lawhorne, 64, District Deputy Grand Matron (District 4) of the Myra Grand Chapter, OES PHA and former Worthy Matron of the Mary Jane Henry Chapter #54, departed this life peacefully on June 14,2023 at her home in Cambridge, Maryland.

Born on August 27,1958 in Chestertown, Maryland, Kim was the eldest daughter of the late Emerson Hall Stewart and Mary Ellen “Dusty” Hicks Stewart Hutt. She was the first grandchild in each family, which both have deep roots in Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties. Kim’s maternal ancestors can be traced through at least six generations of emancipated African Americans on the Eastern Shore since the early 19th century and include veterans of every major US military engagement since the Civil War.

After graduating from Queen Anne’s County High School in 1976, Kim pursued post-secondary studies at the University of Maryland, Chesapeake College, and Towson University, where she received her bachelors’ degree. She was employed in behavioral health therapy at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center, and advanced into management while pursuing a master's degree. At the time of her retirement, Kim was Director of Rehabilitation Services.

Kim fell in love with co-worker Paul Lawhorne. They were wed on May 31, 1986. Together, they established a welcoming and family-centered home, creating special traditions for nephews Reggie and Keith, and hosting extended family gatherings. Kim and Paul enjoyed 13 years of marriage until Paul’s death in May 1999 from cancer.

Kim will be remembered for her charismatic and generous spirit, her joy for life, and her infectious smile. She showered family and friends alike with kindness and encouragement. From an early age, Kim formed a special bond with her maternal Aunt Lee (B. Rosalie Perine) and her paternal Aunt DeeDee (Delores Stewart Davis). Those relationships became the foundation for relationships with two generations of her own nieces and nephews, by blood and of the heart, who looked to her for straight talk and motivational guidance, along with hugs and unconditional love. To her patients, Kim was a source of strength, stability, and smiles. She was a fun and adventurous friend and travel companion, whether out on a shopping trip, a visit to Las Vegas, or on a cruise. She was a beloved Sister of 1976, enjoying regular outings to celebrate friendships spanning six decades with her former QACHS classmates. As an OES Sistar, she was loved, respected, and admired for her capable leadership and her heart of gold. Kim touched the lives of many with her wonderful spirit – beautiful inside and out – and she will be missed forever.

In addition to her husband Paul, her parents Emerson and Dusty, and beloved Aunt Lee and Aunt DeeDee, Kim is preceded in death by uncles James L. Perine, Grafton H. Stewart and Stanley Stewart, cousin Keith E. Perine, step-father Morris Hutt, and step-brother Kevin Gwynne.

Celebrating her life and continuing her memory are her sisters, Sheree “Winky” Stewart (Walter Hutchins), Patricia Turner (Travis, Sr.), and Lakisha Adams; nephews and nieces Reginald Briscoe (Marquita), Keith Briscoe, Jared Gibson (Lexi), Destiny Ware (AJ), Travis Turner Jr. and Travion Turner; special cousin Lori Perine (Roger Brown) who was like a sister; special cousin Kelly Perine who was like a brother; special nieces Madeleine Perine-Brown and LaNeeka Ennels; close cousins Charlene Wilson and Christy Davis-Nougues; step-mother Willie Jenkins Stewart; aunt Sylvia Wilson; godchildren Azairen and AzEyera Johnson and Shadrienne Williams; special loved one Martha Cooper Cheers; and a host of nieces, nephews, many extended family members, and numerous friends.
