John Collins, Sr. Obituary

John Wayne Collins, Sr, the beloved son of the late Lillian and James Collins II, was born on December 28, 1961 in Cambridge, MD.

John was the youngest of eight children and though he could be rough around the edges and outspoken, he was really just a mama’s boy at heart. In fact, he let us all know, that his mother was his heart. John’s heart was big, and he loved people. He would go out of his way to help others.

John will be remembered for his storytelling and his overthinking. John talked fast and he talked a lot. So much so, that his mother used to call him, “The Mouthpiece.” He had so much to say that he’d ask you a question, answer his own question, and be on his way without ever hearing your answer. On top of that, he spoke so fast, that his grandchildren thought he was speaking in another language.

John loved his children, his grandchildren and his family. He was always talking about them and how proud he was of what they had become. He was always talking about God and thanking and praising the “Good Lord.” It didn’t matter what he was involved in, he was going to recognize and praise his Creator. John acknowledged the power of God and was baptized in the name of Jesus at Pentecostal Temple Church in Aireys, Maryland.

John lived his life to his fullest. He played by his own rules. He made sure to have fun and enjoy each day. He laughed. He joked. He shot pool. He played cards, horseshoes, chess, checkers and the game of Trouble. He spent precious time with friends and loved ones. John stayed fresh. He was truly, one Cool Cat. He could just be visiting family or going to the store, and you might see him in a three-piece suit, a top hat and a cane, while only visiting the same people, he sees every day.

John didn’t just play hard though. He also worked hard. He held many jobs throughout the years with various companies. He worked as a laborer, a forklift driver, a machine operator, and he held many other positions. His employers have been Con Agra, Clark Canning House, Allen Foods and Pillsbury, just to name a few. There is no life without both sunshine and rain. John was fortunate to find the sunshine in each day, though sometimes it seemed difficult to grasp.

John grew up in Dorchester County and received his education in the Dorchester County Public School system. Sadly, on Friday, November 28, 2019, he passed away at his residence in Federalsburg, MD.

John leaves to cherish his loving memories, his children, Jonice Collins, John Wayne Collins Jr. and Laverne Elvey, all of Cambridge, MD; ten grandchildren, Jah’ye Rodriguez, Maleik Collins, Keimoni Collins, Aaron Collins, Jace Collins, Jordan Collins, Lyric Collins, Zion Collins, Jonathan Collins and Jo’Mir Norman, all of Cambridge, MD; four older brothers, James Herbert Collins Sr., Severn Collins Sr., Joe Collins Sr., all of Cambridge, MD and Calvin Collins Sr. of Federalsburg, MD; three loved ones, raised as brothers and sisters, Darcel Harmon, John Harmon and Wanda Harmon, all of Wilmington, DE; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues and acquaintances.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Catherine Savage Collins and James Herbert Collins II; two sisters, Geraldine Collins and Darlene Collins; and one brother, Larry Collins.

John was a loving, funny and outgoing person. He will surely be missed, and he leaves this world to mourn his passing.
