James Conyer, Sr. Obituary

James Elmer Conyer Sr, age 70 of Grasonville, Maryland was born on July 5, 1954 to late Florence Conyer and William Elmer Conyer of Grasonville, MD. James was an angel on this earth prior to gaining his wings on May 1, 2025 when he was called home to be with our Lord and Savior. James was the only son out of five children. To his siblings, James was know as “baby brother.”

James graduated from Queen Anne’s County High School- Class of 1973. He later went on to work for Queen Anne’s County Board Of Education, where he retired in 2017 with over 30 plus years proudly served never missing a day of work. In addition, to his time serving at Queen Anne’s County Board of Education James also worked for The Queen Anne’s County Transfer Station for over 35 years. James took so much pride in both roles and thoroughly enjoyed the connections he made with everyone he met. You could always count on being greeted by James’s smiling face as well as helping hand when running into him in the schools, at the store, or at the Batts Neck or Grasonville Transfer stations. He never missed an opportunity to speak to anyone he came across.

James followed in his father’s footsteps volunteering to haul trash for those in his community. In addition, to James’s jobs with the county and hauling trash he also loved to go to various flea markets over the years and network. He enjoyed the flea market even more when his kids accompanied him. James was a pillar to his community and an excellent role model to all with his positive mindset, values, and manners. James did not care how old or young he always respectfully addressed those he would meet as ma’am, miss, and sir.

James was a great athlete in his younger days and enjoyed shooting the basketball around the gym with his oldest daughter Jawana, as well as upcoming star students at Kennard. James was an excellent 3-point shooter. Anyone who knew James knows that he would proudly represent his favorite football team, the Baltimore Ravens. Whether it was cheering his team on, wearing his Ravens Jersey and cap to match, or lounging around the house in his Ravens slippers and pajamas. One of his most proud moments was enjoying watching the Ravens game in person when his youngest daughter Dominique surprised him with tickets to the rival Ravens vs Steelers game.

James has always been such a family man. His love for his children was very abundant. However, James's love intensified in 2012 when he received the title of "Pop-Pop" as he was blessed with his first grandchild, Amira. His love for his grandchildren was immeasurable. James took pride in the time he spent with his grandchildren especially since his parents never got to meet their grandchildren so he cherished every moment spent with them. He would brag to any and every one with ears to listen about anything pertaining to each one of them. He was a proud father and an extremely proud Pop-Pop. Something as simple as trips to Cracker Barrel with his family, a holiday dinner at one of his daughter's homes, going to Grandparents Day with his grandson, preparing for his son's wedding, or updated pictures of his granddaughters would give him so much joy and bragging rights. Those were the things that made him the happiest.

James started his journey with Christ at Robinson AME Church.  He always carried great faith and remained a man of God.  One of James's many qualities were that he took great honor in helping ANYONE in need. Some of his greatest attributes have always been his exceedingly pleasant demeanor, his willingness to lend a helping hand in any way possible, and his generosity. All of James's former students, colleagues, customers turned family, friends, and relatives have all attest to this throughout the course of his life. He took great pride in being the God-fearing man that everyone loved. He enjoyed listening to his "spirituals" as he called them.

James will always be remembered for his friendly conversations, kind heart, and being one of the hardest working men of all times. He's also well known for his voluntary lawn care services at the cemetery, his routine stops at the convenient stores where he would play keno and his lucky lottery numbers, hauling anyone's trash who asked for his assistance, cheering on his Baltimore Ravens, and dining in at his favorite local restaurants.

James was preceded in death by his parents Florence and William Elmer Conyer; two sisters: Barbara Griffin Taybron and Charlotte Conyer; and one nephew James Fisher Jr. (JJ).

James leaves to cherish his memories his only son, James Conyer Jr. (Kim); two daughters, Jawana Conyer and Dominique Conyer; two granddaughters, Amira Conyer and Gianna Conyer; one grandson, Auri Conyer; two sisters, Mary Fisher (James) and Burnetta Conyer; three nephews, Tracy Ferguson (Kornthea), Demetrus Fisher (Maria), Aaron Conyer; three great nephews, Tracy (TJ) Jr., Tiago, Francisco, and Benjamin; one great niece, Tashya (Jonathan); special cousin, Joyce Johnson; special friends, Wanda Hines, George Demas, Bill and Norma Patton, Brenda McCrae, and Dorothy Keene and a host of friends and family who loved him dearly.
