Henry Calvin Wallace, age 73, departed this life on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, North Carolina with his family at his side.
Henry was born in Coleman Corner, Maryland, to the late Doris Green and the late Otha Wallace, Sr., on April 15, 1951. Henry was the oldest of his siblings. He graduated from Chestertown High School class of 1970.
After high school, Henry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served thirty years of active duty. His military education and training started in 1971 and included the following courses: Instructor’s courses for Law & War, Drill Instructor’s Courses, Staff Noncommissioned Officer Career Academy, and Advanced Staff Noncommissioned Officer Career courses, in San Diego. In addition to the above courses, in 1994, Wallace’s training included the Master Gunnery Sergeant Symposium; In 2000, his education and training included SGTMAJ/SYMPOSIUM CRS (L9G) 94, and Drug/Alcohol Seminar CRS (M4B) 91. SNCO Advanced CRS (T8H) 87. Wallace later transferred to Villanova University, NROTC Unit in PA as an assistant Marine Officer instructor. His Primary Specialty titles included: 14 years and 5 months as SGTMAJ/1STSGT, and 1 year and 8 months as infantry unit leader. His decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons awarded or Authorized over his career included the following: National Defense Service Medal, (W/1 Bronze Star) Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (W/1 Silver Star and 4 Bronze stars), Meritorious Mast (2), Letter of Appreciation (2), Letter of Commendation, Humanitarian Service Medal, Certificate of Appreciation, and Certificate of Recognition. During an exit interview with the Globe in 2001, Wallace stated to Cpl. Mike Vrabel, “Never miss an opportunity to improve yourself, mentally and physically, “and continue to take care of each other.” This was a motto we believe he lived by. Upon retiring from the US Marine Corps, SGTMAJ/1STSGT Henry C. Wallace received an honorable discharge. As a civilian, Wallace worked 20 years, as a range inspector for the Department of Defense, in North Carolina, ending his career in 2021, with a plan to move back home to Chestertown.
On March 15, 1986, Henry married his late wife, Denise, and they conceived one child together, Ebony Jade Wallace, who was the apple of his eye. Henry’s military career duties and deployment assignments carried him overseas, while his family resided in Jacksonville, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 33 years, Denise; three sisters, Joanne Wilson-Davis, Renee Green, and Shirley Wallace; three and brothers, Charles Edward Wallace, Gordon Wallace, and Bruce Green.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter, Ebony Wallace of Jacksonville, NC, two bonus children, William Person III and Evette McNair, both of NC; seven bonus grandchildren, Diondre Wilson (Shydasha) of Greensboro, NC, Tremayne McNair of California, Jordynn McNair of NC, William Person IV of GA, Isaiah Person, Maliyah Person, and Shayla Denise Person, of Jacksonville NC; one great-granddaughter, Amina McNair of Texas; four sisters, Sharon Scott of Chestertown, MD, Bonda Brooks of Dover, DE, Donita Farmer of Baltimore, MD, and Dinah Hicks (Alfred) of
Chestertown, MD; one brother, Otha Wallace (Erica) of DE; brother-in-law, Raymond Cotton III (Dorothy) of Still Pond, MD; sisters-in-law, Odessa Green of Hurlock, MD, Margaret Wallace of Worton, MD, Barbara Wilson of Chestertown, MD, Deborah Wright of Still Pond, MD, Doris Cotton of New Castle, DE, Karen Taylor (Edwin) of Hurlock, MD, and Robin Walker (Gordon) of Elkton, MD; one aunt, Amy Wilson of Worton, MD; close friends, Charles Martin and Sloan Lemuel; special friends since childhood, Garnett Brooks, Gregory Brooks, Billy Roberts, and Sheldon Phillips; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
