Helen Marie Cannon , 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday,January 13, 2024 at Caroline Nursing and Rehabilitation in Denton, Md. Helen was born on December 1, 1943 to the late Ernest Brummell and Amanda Dickerson Brummell in Federalsburg. Helen was a lifelong resident of Caroline County and graduated from Lockerman High School with the Class of 1961. She earned her Associate of Arts Degree from Chesapeake College and continued her education in the area of early childhood education throughout her lifetime. She worked at the Benedictine School and retired from the Denton Child Development Center after more than 30 years of service. She really loved teaching and working with children and often shared stories of the many children whose lives she touched and who in turn touched her life. Helen, affectionately known as “the Avon Lady”, worked as an Avon Representative for over 45 years and received numerous awards for her years of service. Helen was a longtime member of the Caroline County NAACP serving on the Freedom Fund Banquet Committee and was the immediate past Treasurer. Helen was a lifelong member of the Federalsburg-Denton Charge joining John Wesley Methodist Church (Holland Mission) at an early age and then as a member of Metropolitan United Church Ministries of Zion UMC, Federalsburg. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Communion Steward, Treasurer, Finance Chairman, Finance Secretary, and member of the Staff/Pastor Relations Committee. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Edward Maurice Cannon and Raymond E. Cannon. Helen is survived by two brothers, Robert Lee Brummell of Copperas Cove, Texas, Ernest H. Brummell of Denton, Md and one sister, Shirley Mae Brummell of Columbus Ohio, several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her church family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Metropolitan United Methodist Church 407 Gay Street Denton, Md at 11am. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
