Harry Melvin Cartwright, Sr., Ph.D., a distinguished educator, dedicated medical professional, and veteran, passed away on April 20, 2026, in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland, at the age of 84.

Born in Wetipquin, Maryland, to the late Albert G. Cartwright and Nettie Helen Jones, Dr. Cartwright’s life was defined by a profound commitment to healthcare, higher education, and entrepreneurship. He began his professional journey after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Respiratory Therapy.

His early clinical work as a staff therapist at Crozer-Chester Medical Center quickly caught the attention of academic leaders. Recruited by the University of the District of Columbia, Dr. Cartwright served as the Director of Clinical Education for 13 years.

In 1983, he joined the faculty of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), where he successfully developed and implemented the Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy program, securing full accreditation from the American Association for Respiratory Care Education. While leading this program, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education from Florida State University.

Dr. Cartwright was a man of diverse talents; he was a successful business owner and a published author of three books, including "My Yoke Hasn't Always Been Easy." He also proudly served his country for six years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: James, Elizabeth, Wilbert, Leroy, Annette, Rose, Norma Lee, John, and Martha.

His legacy continues through his children: Larry Jones (Tracey), Harry Melvin, Jr., Angela Bey (Rob), William Anthony (Ama "Nikki"), and Terry Wilks-Glover (Keenan). He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, three siblings, Carrie Price of Quantico, Maryland; Ruth Jones of Preston, Maryland; and Mary Elizabeth Miles of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
