Fred Thomas Brummell, Jr., son of Fred Thomas Brummell, Sr. and the late Jean Loretta Adams Brummell, was born March 13, 1956, in Denton, Maryland. He left this life on August 4, 2025 at his home, with his father by his side. He was 69.
Fred or “Jr.” as the family would call him, received his education at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick, Maryland. There he played football, basketball and ran track. At times an entire bus was chartered to go watch him play. Yes, he was that good. Later he had a surgery and then as a result became a paraplegic.
Fred Jr. was first employed as a janitor at Preston Elementary School during the summer. He then became a teacher at Seaford Head Start where he taught youth how to use sign language. Later he taught Sign Language classes at Chesapeake College before moving on to work at Black and Decker as a machine operator. He worked there faithfully for 15 years, no matter the weather they both would show up to work. It was at Black and Decker he met the love of his life, Bernette Ann Stanley who he later married on October 24, 1992, and loved her immensely for 18 years until her death. She was his everything and he was hers.
Fred Jr. loved his wife, his family and his sports. Go Ravens, Go Orioles! In fact, just on the pass Sunday he purchased a “too big 75” screen to get ready for the Raven’s pre-season game. He also loved watching tv, and his 2 boiled eggs (every morning). In addition to all that, he loved his deaf community. At times, he appeared to be the “Godfather” to them all, watching over them, housing them and feeding them on the best furniture and food Freddie could buy. (smiles) His house was their safe haven.
He was a “silent member” of Ross Chapel AME Church since childhood. He particularly loved the Annual Brummell’s Day Service where his deaf friends would show up in full-force. He also loved ordering the “infamous” Harvest Home Dinners, baking and delivering at least 5 sweet potato pies each time and also making macaroni and cheese for the dinners.
Fred Jr. was preceded in death by his wife, Bernette Brummell and his mother, Jean Brummell.
He leaves to mourn his passing and to also remember him, his father, Fred Thomas Brummell, Sr. (Pat Adams Brummell), of Denton, Maryland; three brothers, Derick Brummell (Yvonne) of Preston, Maryland; Shelton Brummell of Denton, Maryland and Kevin Brummell (Cynthia) of Denton, Maryland, sisters, Shi Adams and Jacquela Horsey, a very close cousin, Michael Brummell and very close friend, Michelle Cook, dedicated and devoted friend~caregivers, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a million and one other friends that we just cannot mention them all. They all held special parts in his heart.
