Edith Beatrice Jenkins Hayman passed on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at the University of Maryland Shore Medical at Easton surrounded by loved ones. She was 88 years old.
“Edie”, as she was affectionately known, was born to the late Arthur Bailey and Estella Ockimey on September 4, 1934, in Easton, Maryland and was the 5th born of 6 children.
She assumed the role of family matriarch at a young age, always being the biggest supporter for everyone in the family. Edie was proud of where her family came from, all that they accomplished, and devoted her time instilling those ideals into each generation. She married Charles “Webbie” Hayman in October, 1959 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Easton, Maryland. From this union they raised 6 children.
Edie graduated from Robert Russa Moton High School in 1952 and in 1957 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Maryland State College, currently known as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She achieved a master equivalent with a concentration in Education from several schools in Maryland including the University of Maryland College Park and Salisbury State College.
Upon graduating she started her teaching career in the public school system. She taught Home Economics, Special Education and Pre-K in Talbot and Caroline counties. Edith was a passionate teacher that used her gifts to positively impact the lives of so many others. During the summer months she also worked at Firstmen’s Sewing Factory. After retirement, she assisted students with their studies as an alternative educational tutor.
Edith was a lifelong loyal member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she served on the Trustee, Finance and Pastors Parish Relations Committees. Her great passion for music led her to sing in many choirs both at church and the community. At church, she led the soup kitchen, served with the United Methodist Women and was notably responsible for organizing the United Methodist Men at Asbury. She also taught Sunday School, vacation bible school and led after school programs. In the later years, she began attending St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and became very active in different ministries. She was a devoted Christian that loved serving the Lord and believed in leaving something better than she found it.
Outside of church, she dedicated countless hours to community service, civic duties, and volunteer organizations. She was proud member of the Cambridge Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and served in many capacities. Her life’s work epitomized the pillars of the sorority, scholarship, public service, and sisterhood. She also spent time giving back to the community as a loyal member to the following organizations: Richards Memorial Park Cemetery, Order of the Eastern Star Lodge, Camp Lazy Daze, Girl Scouts, Special Olympics, Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital at Easton, and C.A.S.A. Edith received countless citations, awards, and recognitions to her lifelong commitment to community service.
Her smile could light up a room and she had a heart of gold. The grandchildren lovingly called her “MeMom” however that name was used by many others whose life she touched. MeMom was known for her “quick wit” and “exceptional humor”. In her free time, she enjoyed playing Sudoku, and watching game shows like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud. Additionally, as an excellent seamstress she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and sewing for herself and the family.
Edith was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, their daughter Margaret Edith, brothers, Martin Sr. and Richard, sisters, Susie Mae, Emma, Mamie and two nieces that were raised more like her sisters, Ernestine and Barbara.
She leaves to cherish her fond memory: five children; Joyce (Marshall), Charlene (Tyrone), Donnie, Darlene (Howard Sr.), and Charlotte; eight grandchildren; LeMont, Javonna (who was raised by Edith and husband/Charles) (Harold), Cardell, Howard Jr. (Michelle), Erica, Jamaine (Traci), Ashley, Aaron; fourteen great-grandchildren, Britney, Morgan, Maesa, Breanna, ZaKerra, Camden, ZaKiya, Brendan, Sloane, Lila, Kaiya, Micah, Jayce, Eli; a great-great grandchild Kai; goddaughter, Marilyn (Richard) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
“She is living in the hearts of those she touched for nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much.”
