Obituary

On July 24, 2023, Devyn Lynnzie Perkins, 8, of Preston, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by love and family after a two-year battle with cancer. Devyn was born to Timmeka and Devin Perkins on May 3, 2015—two weeks late and on her on time. Devyn was a lifelong resident of the eastern shore of Maryland.

Devyn became a member of Tidewater Gymnastics as soon as she was old enough to tumble. She advanced to competition level just prior to her diagnosis. However, she maintained her love of the beam and the bars throughout her treatment.

Devyn attended The Country School in Easton, MD from Pre-K through Second Grade, where she was a proud member of the Gold Team. The family would like to thank school staff, parents and students for their continued support and accommodations over the past year. Devyn was able to participate in school, field trips and field days throughout daily treatments, which brought her great joy.

Devyn envisioned attending Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA before beginning a career in either service or STEM. Over the years, careers as a police officer, firefighter, and archaeologist were all mentioned. The one thing that she knew for sure was that she wanted to live someplace where there was no snow, likely Florida, with a house full of animals. Devyn loved the water—from puddle jumping to the beach.

Devyn Lynn was raised by a village of love and support, not a traditional family. She is preceded in death by Alonzo Bowling and Terrance Brownlee III. She is survived by: her parents- Timmeka Perkins and Devin Perkins; her grandparents-- Dianna Meekins, Timothy Brice and Elizabeth and Gregory Perkins; and aunts and uncles—Daylan and Destiny Perkins, Andrew Nicholas, Kendall Sutton, Sammy Boateng, Kiara Price, Brandon Ferrell, Myia Walters and Michelle LeVere. While Devyn was an only child, she leaves behind cousins who she loved like siblings, Kaleigh Cornish and Kayson Price.

The family would like to thank the medical staff of Sibley Memorial Hospital and Children’s National Hospital for all that they did to give us more time with Devyn and keep her smiling. Devyn’s legacy continues through her contributions to the Neuro-Oncology Research Team at Children’s National.

Devyn Lynnzie’s love for people and faith in Jehovah never wavered nor did she ever complain. She was a reflection of God’s love and the power of His grace until the very end. Before her speech left her, Devyn Lynnzie recited the following every morning before facing the day. I hope you remember these words and they bring you comfort.

I am loved. I do my best. My best is enough. My best is enough for my teacher. My best is enough for my Mommy. My best is enough for Jehovah. Today, I will be happy on purpose. The good always outweighs the bad.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, August 4th at 3:30 pm at the Talbot County Community Center (10028 Ocean Gateway, Easton, MD 21601). A meal of comfort and fellowship will follow at the Easton Volunteer Fire Department (315 Aurora Park Dr., Easton, MD 21655). The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to either The Country School (Easton, MD) or the Forever Moriah Foundation.
