Daniel Vanriel Obituary

Daniel Antonio VanRiel, 78, of Cambridge, Maryland, passed away on April 3, 2024, after a long battle with illness. Those who witnessed his fight considered him the strongest man they knew.

Daniel was born on October 17, 1945 to Gladys Brown and Ralph VanRiel in Kingston, Jamaica. His love for the automotive industry started early in his homeland as a mechanic and bus driver. These trades were later found to be critical in providing for his immediate and extended family.

Daniel loved spending time with his family, reading, working out, and of course he enjoyed a good meal. Mangoes and peanuts were his favorite snacks. He also enjoyed the beauty of the earth. He was known for taking long-distance bike rides, working out on the beach, and swimming far out in the ocean. All were pastimes that he shared with his family. Anyone familiar with Daniel knew his love and passion for Bob Marley. He literally could listen to him every day, all day. He was honored to know him personally. Until his final day he sought solace in his music.

His family and friends share countless experiences of his selfless and giving spirit. He was a man of God. He was a family man. A man’s man. No matter what his circumstances, he chose to always keep his family close together. His most proud roles were father, grandfather, and uncle. As a man of faith, Daniel made a fearless decision to become the first in his family to take the journey to the United States to seek a better life for everyone. Soon after getting settled, he met Yvette Graham, whom he shared a special friendship and love for until his passing.

Daniel leaves behind his daughter, Danielle Gladys VanRiel Johnson (husband Bernard Johnson); sons, Antonio Ralph VanRiel (wife Yolanda VanRiel) and Jerry (Sherine) Washington; daughter, Myra Graham; grandchildren; Daniel Antonio VanRiel II, Antonio Ralph VanRiel, Jr., Mekhi Wesley VanRiel, Phillip Raphael VanRiel, Shaleena, Sheria, Raphael, Melahn, and Brandon; and great-grands, Elias, Amir, Amari, and Tesfaye.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Hansel, and special niece, Deanna. He is survived by his sister, Lora, and brothers, Eaton, Wesley, and Paul. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who love “Uncle Johnny” dearly. Our family would also like to acknowledge two special people who were with him on his last day on earth: his special granddaughter, Jacinda, and his caregiver of many years, Regina. He also leaves behind a host of family and friends who chose to honor him until his last day.
