Alfred Mathwich Obituary

In loving memory of Al Mathwich, of Church Hill MD, who passed away on October 13, 2025.   Al was born in 1944 as Alfred James Bridges, Jr., to mom June and dad Al.  His dad was killed in WWII when he was six months old.  In his early adulthood, he changed his last name to that of his stepfather to match his mom, brother Nick and sister Gretchen.  He grew up in Long Island, NY and Cherry Hill, NJ, and moved to the Eastern Shore to attend Washington College, eventually settling in Church Hill.  He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and made his wife laugh in even the most difficult moments of their life together.  In his sailboat in earlier years with his friends, or in the houseboat with his family, he loved being on the water, accompanied by his faithful golden retrievers.  He graduated as a math major from Washington College, and loved programming and building computers, before the days of PCs.  He made many lifelong friends in the area, and also in his stint in the Marine Corps Reserves.  He had been a board member of the Church Hill Theatre and the UU Church in Chestertown, and had served on a committee for the Town of Church Hill.  He liked being his own boss, and established two businesses, Microspec Systems and Matrix Records Storage.  He had a deep love for his family, and is survived by wife Jackie, daughter Emily, her fiancé Thayer,  daughter Hannah, her husband Joshua, sister Gretchen Demmerle, niece Jessica, her husband Nate and two children, as well as close cousins Chip Burr, wife Becky, and Shelley Heller, husband Moore, and brother in law Steve Baddour, husband Scott Hunter. His brother, Nick, sadly predeceased him in 1989.  Al will be deeply missed but will live on in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor could be made to Hilarity for Charity at https://wearehfc.org, and once the donation is made, enter jackiem6703@gmail.com as the email so that the family can acknowledge your donation.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 2 pm at the Church Hill Theatre.
