Pernell Cornelius Edwards transitioned from labor to reward on June 1, 2019 at the Atlantic Shores Rehabilitation and Health Center in Millsboro, Delaware. Pernell was born in Suffolk, VA formerly known as Chuckatuck, VA to Mason Newby and Josephine Edwards on October 13, 1937. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearline Edwards, both parents, two sisters, Mae and Edith Edwards and two sons.

Pernell retired from the Transportation Department at the City of Newport News School Board in 1990. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior in 2016 and rededicated his life to Christ on May 31, 2019 before entering his eternal rest.

Anyone who knew Pernell, knew that he loved his children and enjoyed spending time with them. He always talked about his brother, Willie. He had a passion for music and sports. His favorite team was the Philadelphia Eagles. He was very charming and inspirational especially when sharing his stories of the “good ole days.”

Pernell is survived by his brother; Willie Edwards (Betty), his children; Terris Cannon (Barbara), Sheila Edwards, Jeffery Edwards (April), Pamela Jenkins, Daniella Gibbs, Paula Williams, Pearline White-Williams, Daniel Edwards, Shalonda Edwards, Antoine Edwards, 27 grandchildren and 16 great grand-children, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

You have always been the one to bounce back, the time finally came when you could no longer be so strong. I will always remember you telling me that I had to be in before the street lights came on. No I couldn't have a boyfriend to stay in school and get good grades. I remember waking up to home cooked potatoes and bacon and sausages with loud gospel music every Sunday morning when all I wanted to do was sleep in. Pops... I miss you, but I know you are smiling down on me. Rest in Paradise, Pearline.
